1963 Studebaker Avanti

Very original Avanti R1 fitted with nearly all factory options! Built in the height of production in January 1963 and fitted with air conditioning. PowerShift automatic transmission. power steering. power disc brakes. and original 289ci V8 engine! Excellent head turner! This represents #1. 85 of 4. 47 produced! What an excellent buy for collectors!

With attention solely set forth to attract a younger audience of buyers to Studebaker showrooms. a team of four talented engineers & designers were asked to accomplish this task on a short schedule beginning in the spring of 1961. From design to production. the new Avanti went from concept approval to production by June 1962. It was a sensational hit with bold characteristics. updated performance options. as well as safety enhancements! The chassis selected was borrowed from the very successful Studebaker Lark convertible for having a very rigid. X-frame design. It was further improved with a stiffer front sway bar. heavy duty Police coil springs. hydraulic shocks. semi-elliptical 5-leaf rear springs from the Lark station wagon. and added radius rods. The sturdy end result provided tremendous strength and rigidity for outstanding handling characteristics of the day! Stopping power was improved with standard power disc brakes at the front.

To compensate for the weight of the chassis. Studebaker opted to use a reinforced glass-fiber body. Its wedge-like look was both simple & very sporty. with aggressively sharp lines. single headlights at the forward corners. but no traditional front grill. The hood tilted forward. and the taillights wrapped around the body. The unique shape was a hit among Studebaker executives. Weighing in at just 510 pounds. the molded bodies were completely built. chassis-prepped. & painted by MFG Body Co. based in Ashtabula. OH. It was offered in just 6 color choices. Between June of 1962 through December 1963. only 4. 47 lucky owners got to own this unique piece of Studebaker history. As with all automobile manufacturing. the design was changed to later become the Avanti II beginning in 1965.

We are very pleased to offer this largely original 1963 Studebaker Avanti R1 finished in Avanti Gold over Fawn & Elk upholstery with Black carpets. Under the hood lies its original 289ci OHV V8 and PowerShift Flight-o-Matic transmission feeding a 3. 31:1 rear axle ratio! Inside the luxurious cabin. the cockpit instrumentation is nicely laid out. with a center console between contoured front bucket seats. Overhead. the exterior lighting & dash panel controls are very uniquely placed. as are the heater blower controls! Additional interesting features include standard padded dash and a glove compartment with pop up vanity mirror! The option list on this example is rather long. and includes functional air conditioning. white sidewall tires. front seat belts. working AM radio with rear fender antenna & rear speaker. front & rear tinted windshields. and power steering!

With only cosmetic improvements over the years that includes one older repaint. this very original example has survived the test of time extremely well! Showing 11. 64 miles on the odometer. we do believe this equates to a rollover since new. It hails from northern Florida where it was maintained by the last two owners for many years. the most recent serving as its curator since July 2003. Both were members of the Northeast Florida Studebaker Club and The Studebakers Drivers Club Inc. More recently. we have fully serviced the air conditioning to blow cold. as well as add 5 new Hankook whitewall radial tires to include the spare. All brake hoses were replaced at the front and rear. new rear radius bushing installed. along with fresh fluids inside the engine. A cylinder compression check resulted in an average of 138psi across all cylinders. It starts and runs very strong! If you are looking for an interesting piece for your collection that is not often seen at car shows or on the auction block. this should prove to be an excellent opportunity for you! Please feel welcome to call with additional questions! We look forward to working with you!
