1954 Austin Healey 100-4 Chevy

This beautiful car was originally built in England in 1954. the second year of production.   It's stunning good looks never fails to turn heads with it's classic British Sports car shape.   People are always telling me it looks like a COBRA. “wrong” Cobra's look like Healeys.   However. if you are looking for a legitimate English car. you need to look elsewhere.   The only original part of the car is the sheet metal.   I have eliminated the troublesome “Lucas” electrics. uncomfortable seats. ancient knee action shocks. numb steering. inadequate cooling system. underpowered engine. weak transmission and rear end. and replaced all with modern American components.

Engine:

The engine is a 4 Bolt Main 350 bored . 030 over.   It has been balanced and blue printed.   The internal parts include a forged crank. flat top 10 to 1 forged pistons. a high performance hydraulic lifter and cam shaft by “Comp Cams”.   The Heads are aluminum Edlebrock Performer. Edlebrock Torker manifold. with a 650 CFM double pumper Holly

Cooling:

This car never overheats! I have driven fifty miles in Palm Springs at 110 degrees and it never got above the thermostat opening temp of 195. It has a monster cross-flow dual pass radiator. dual high flow electric cooling fans and a high flow water pump.

Transmission:

The transmission is a rebuilt Mucie 4-speed from a 1966 Corvette.   It has a Hurst shifter. a McLoud clutch. and a Tilton Hydraulic throw out bearing. The scatter shield is made by Lakewood

Differential:

The rear end is a 9” Ford narrowed by Currie.   It has Forged Currie axles. with a 3. 25 positraction from “Tom's Differentials”.   It and all suspension parts have been powder coated

Front Suspension:

The front suspension was engineered to provide the perfect balance between ride and handling.   The new front crossmenber locates the control arms made by “Chubby Chassis”. Mustang II spindles. coil over shocks custom valved by Bilstein. and coil springs from Eibach.

Rear Suspension:

The rear end is also supported by coil over shocks from Bilstein. Eibach springs. a four link design with a Panhard bar.

Steering:

The steering is a narrowed Mustang II rack and pinion. The column is a shortened tilt unit made by GM.

Exhaust:

It has custom ceramic coated long tube headers and Spin Tec low profile mufflers with a side outlet in front of the rear wheels.

.

Body and Chassis:

The body has been painstakingly restored and painted with a 2 step. base coat. clear coat metallic blue paint.   As you can see in the photos it is nearly flawless.   The original thin wall frame was cut out and replaced with . 125 wall rectangular tubing. The roll bar is part of a full cage that connects the front cross member to the rear suspension for maximum chassis support. All the floor was cut out and replaced with a double layer steel floor with an insulation sandwich.   This keeps the exhaust heat outside the cabin and your feet never get hot.

Interior:

The interior is all new. The dash is wood with a plastic wood look overlay.   The gauges are VDO with a Mallory tack. The seats were from a Fiero but they had the high backs cut off and custom lumbar support added.

Wheels/Tires:

The beautiful wire wheels are commonly referred to as Cobra Wires. They are chrome plated with stainless 72(?) spokes. The tires are Yokohamas sized 205-60-15

Brakes

The brakes are four wheel disc. The fronts are GM calipers with Ford Granada rotors. This is a common street rod set up that really stops quickly and straight. The rear discs are also from Ford. The advantages of using large car components are that you will never overstress the brakes in such a light car and the parts are cheap and easy to find. I also like having the Ford bolt pattern under the wire wheel adapters so any Ford wheel can be fit. The pedal assembly and master cylinders(Yes. cylinders. one for the front and one for the rear) are made by Tilton

Summary:

This car has been wonderful to own. It's UNBELIEVABLE to drive. The sound. the feel. the power to weight ratio. the brakes. the steering. the ride. all are first class. People always want to talk to me about it and that is fun. One guy looked at the valve covers and asked ”Was this engine an option?”  I first showed it in 2002 at the Healey reunion in Lake Tahoe where it gathered a lot of attention. . It has been shown many times and raced a little sense then.   It has won many auto-cross trophies. ran a 12. 01 @ 112 mph in the quarter mile and provided miles and miles of fun filled driving. It's dead reliable with under stressed American components. I hate to part with it but need the garage space. There are a lot of Healey-Chevy conversions out there but few this nice. Good luck with your bidding and the reserve is close to the opening price.
