A modern classic by Pininfarina. the simple-yet-elegant Spider bodywork premiered on the 1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto would prove enduringly popular. lasting on into the 1990s. The Spider's mechanicals were essentially those of the Giulia saloon. comprising independent front suspension. coil-suspended live rear axle and four-wheel servo-assisted disc brakes while the engine was the Sprint GTV's 1. 6-litre. double-overhead-camshaft four. The Duetto was produced for just two years before being superseded by the 1. 8-litre '1750' Spider Veloce. the latter lasting until the advent of the 132bhp 2000 model in 1970. Wind tunnel testing resulted in the 2000 and final 1750 models sporting a drag-reducing Kamm tail while other improvements included bigger brakes and a limited-slip differential. Outstanding speed. acceleration and handling were all characteristics of this class-leading model. which nevertheless possessed a quite remarkable docility. even at high speeds.

This two owner. RHD UK car was ordered new in Farina Red from Rob Walker Alfa Romeo on 25 April 1972. Its first owner selected the limited slip differential from the options list at £38. 67. the final bill showing that £2. 44. 37 changed hands.

The service book and handbook remain with the car. along with an incredible written dossier of everything that has been done to it over the years. Piles of old invoices show the accumulation of mileage to around 135. 00 miles. the previous motor engineer owner having maintained the car for at least 15 years prior to acquiring it for himself.

There are seven old MOTs on file. the current one lasting until April 2015 and the tax disc expiring in March 2015. Considerable restoration work has been carried out over the years. the car looking smart and presentable and driving well. The hood has seen little use since its replacement a few years ago.

This smart two owner example looks an attractive proposition thanks to its continuous history and the recent surge in Alfa prices. Once you get behind the wheel. you will appreciate why these delightful little sportscars are so keenly sought after.
