The Lotus Europa used Lotus founder Colin
Chapman's minimalist steel backbone chassis that was
first used in the Elan. while also relying on
its fibreglass moulded body for structural strength. and
was based on a prototype built to compete for Henry Ford II's
contract to build a Le Mans racing car in the early
1960's. The four-wheel independent suspension was typical
of Chapman's thinking. The rear suspension was a
modified Chapman strut. as used for Chapman's
earlier Formula racing car designs with the handling
prompting automotive writers to describe the Europa as the nearest
thing to a Formula car for the road. The Series 1 was announced for
sale in 1966 and was fitted with a modified Renault
16. 1470cc. inline-four engine and a four-speed
gearbox.

Series 1A and B had removable side windows. wooden dashboard. br/>and internal door panel covers which could accommodate the windows
once taken off. In 1971. the Type 74. Europa Twin Cam was made
available to the public. with a 105bhp. 1558cc Lotus-Ford Twin
Cam engine and a re-designed bodyshell to improve rearward
visibility. The Europa was designed and built to be an embodiment
of Chapman's oft-stated philosophy of automotive design; "simplify. br/>then add lightness. "

Owned by the vendor for the last three years. this iconic Lotus
presents in near standard trim and in good order throughout.
Modifications include a cone air-filter and electronic ignition. br/>both perfectly acceptable upgrades for cars of this period. The
original Dunlop alloy wheels are still in position and the interior
shows no damage and very little wear. The current owner has
serviced the car himself during his tenure. the most recent of
which was January this year. It is also sold with an MoT test
certificate expiring in March. 2014. Supplied with a decent history
file as well as bills from Paul Matty Sports Cars and Europa
Engineering. both respected Lotus specialists. this sound Europa
represents extremely good value for money.
