1978 450SL Mercedes-Benz

Hardtop & Convertible

THIS IS A NO RESERVE AUCTION SO PLEASE BID ONLY IF SERIOUS BUYER

Thank you for viewing my ad. This is a 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL rare color combination of black on red with red pin striping - upholstery red leather with a black soft top. The mileage is original and low at 83. 00. The condition is OUTSTANDING as you will view the pictures and see for yourself. This is a three owner car and has been kept in a climate controlled environment it's entire life; never driven in intemperate weather and never. EVER parked outside.

Originally purchased at Fletcher Jones Newport Beach. California.

I've owned this car for 15 years and put roughly 5000 miles on it. This car has good history and fun to drive; drives very tight and smooth with front and rear disk brakes. The motor and transmission is original to the car and has never been removed or rebuilt. It passes smog every time on the highest end of the scale. The motor starts immediately and sounds great and powerful. The transmission shifts tight and smooth. The car went through a complete refurbish in the fall of 1998 with all new rubber grommets replaced. from steering components to chassis mounts. even the steering post has new grommets -- absolutely no rattles or noises caused by rough roads; solid sounding and driving car.

The mileage is documented and the car was appraised at $24K fourteen years ago -- appraisal papers in hand. along with pink. The car comes with both tops; a hard top that fits so perfectly to the car. that it looks like the top is not removable - you wouldn't know this car is a convertible with the hard top on if you didn't know anything about these cars. It also has a brand new looking soft top with clear plastic windows. Rebuilt seats. upholstery and new carpet; the car has one repaint perfectly and correctly done (meaning every piece of chrome and/ or stainless steel had been removed -- not taped) to the correct era including the red pinstripes which was an additional options of that time. The paint as you can see from the photos was done the right with a shine you can see for miles. This car and I won a trophy for "Shiniest Car" at a car show in 2006. So if you're in the market for one of these highly sought after 450 this is one of very few clean turnkey eras.

Why I'm I selling:
I have too many MBZ's that I keep covered and stored in the garage that I never use -- or at least that's what my wife says. it's time to get back into an old Chevy again. so I have to make room if I want another car. and something has to go!  Wife tells me that if I get another car. she will get another dog.   So. perhaps it's your turn with this extremely well cared for 450SL.

History and noteworthy:
This car was owned originally by the owner and founder of Armor All and was driven by his wife. This is the actual car that was used in the last 70's and early 80's TV commercials as they would wipe the red dash board with a rag and Amor All crossed it to demo the glossy protective shin.

Improvements needed:
1. The AC is not in working condition (but every original component is still intact) and never was when I purchased it. I had every intentions of upgrading the system to current standards. but I never drove the car unless the weather was in perfect driving conditions. It's never driven in the rain since I have owned it.
2. The cruise control does not work. but again all the original components are still intact.

(Improvement not really needed in my opinion due to the car's history with Armor-All and it's reputation but The dash board does have a couple of cracks most likely from the Amor All used.   I never had them repaired to avoid the originality.

Not original to the car:
1. The steering wheel is after market as you can see. but I have the original steering wheel.
2. The stereo is also after market and sounds great. but I also have the original Becker Mexico stereo. and I was told it was in full working condition before it was removed and upgraded to play CD's. etc.
3. The wheels too are not original. but are true MBZ OEM wheels -- not aftermarkets.

If you are a fan of these early W107 SL's here is your chance at a extremely well preserved example !!!
