The ’73 model year (2. 4L) Porsches are fast becoming one of the more sought after long-hood cars due to being the last year of production and the larger engine.   It is even harder to find clean (non-S) examples that are in excellent condition but not closer to the $100. 00+ price range.   Plus. to find one that is one of the early production ‘73’s without the U. S. rubber impact bumpers is extremely difficult.

This example was a very early production 1973.   It is the 31st 1973 Targa delivered to the U. S.   It’s production date is somewhere in the summer of 1972.   As a result. it was imported into the U. S. without those ungainly rubber impact bumpers as well as receive the more desirable MFI (mechanical fuel injection) system over the later CIS injection models.

The current owner lives in Arizona and purchased the car nearly 20-years ago from a fellow enthusiast.   Shortly after purchasing the car. he decided to repaint the car as the original silver paint was showing its age.   At the time. he spent over $6. 00 on the paint and body.   That was a lot of money at the time considering he purchased the car for only $11. 00.   Although the car had never been hit. there were a few rust spots.   One fender was replaced due to rust.   The car was stripped down and repainted it’s original factory silver.   Unfortunately. the current owner never had much time for the car and only drove it a few thousand miles.   It spent most of its life covered in his garage.   Recently. he decided he would get the car running again so that he could find it a new home.   It ended up being delivered to TLG Auto in North Hollywood. CA.   Marco and Tony (father and son) own TLG and are considered one of the top early 911 repair facilities on the West Coast.   Countless Early 911 S and R Gruppe members trust their mechanical restorations to them.

Once the car arrived at TLG and Tony inspected it. he determined that the car had been sitting too long and all the mechanicals would need attention.   Because the chassis and body were so dry and straight. Tony and the owner agreed that it would be worthwhile to invest the money to get this 911 running properly.   In total. nearly $23. 00 was invested.   Highlights of the extensive work included the following:

Complete engine rebuild ($13. 76)

Machine engine case

New crank (70. 4mm)

New alternator

New clutch and flywheel

Transmission rebuild ($2. 14)

New fuel tank

New shocks

New brake pads (exercise caliper pistons…works great)

The end result was a very tight and great driving early 911.   It does everything it should.   This Porsche is one of the better driving long-hoods I’ve experienced.   The power is very smooth and the 915 gearbox shifts with ease.   Of course. TLG stands behind all their work and provide a limited warranty for one-year on the drivetrain.

I would describe this 911 as a very nice driver.   It won’t win any concours awards. but it would be a blast to drive on any vintage or early Porsche tour.   Tony at TLG describes this car as having. “good bones. ”  The bottom is very dry and original.   The chassis is straight.   There are no signs of major rust or prior accident damage.   Being that this is a very early ’73 and a numbers matching MFI engine. it will one day be a great candidate for a full cosmetic restoration.   The silver paint looks very good for 20-years old.   There are a few blemishes from years of storage (see pics). but nothing significant.   The car wears very rare and original Mahle “gas burner” wheels.   These wheels were a cast magnesium wheel that were incredibly light and much sought after by racers in the day.   They were an optional wheel on 911s from 1970-1972.   So. although we are not 100% positive. there is a very good chance these were original to the car.   They were already on the car when the current owner purchased it.

The interior was refurbished over 20-years ago.   The seats are Recaros from the late 70’s/ early 80’s with integrated speakers in the headrests.   The door panels are modified RS America panels.   The dash has a cover on it that was on before the current owner purchased the car.   The targa top headliner is loose and will need to be replaced.   There is also an older Alpine cassette radio and Momo suede steering wheel installed.

This Porsche comes with complete set of Porsche workshop manuals. Certificate of Authenticity. car cover. and spare tire/wheel.
