Just arrived at Cranborne Classics is this very presentable Alfa 75 2. 0 in Alfa Red with Grey velour trim and as a fully paid-up Alfisti. I couldn't wait to give it a drive. With near 50:50 weight distribution. modern suspension and twin-spark technology. these little cars are so under-rated today. Whilst this example has seen more miles than it's stable sibling. it still feels surprisingly tight and has a terrific history file with bills for over £10. 00 since 2008. It would be the perfect daily driver.

So named to celebrate their 75th year of car production. the Alfa Romeo 75 was introduced in May 1985 and became the last model to be released before the company was acquired by Fiat. Offering rear-wheel-drive and a transaxle set-up with the standard 5-speed gearbox rear-mounted and connected to the rear differential. perfect balance was achieved aided by an inspired suspension choice of front torsion bar and shock absorber assembly and rear de Dion tube and shock absorbers. With an initial choice of 4-cylinder engines from 1. 6 to 2. 0 litre and a 2. 5 V6. a turbocharged unit was available for the US market as well as a 2. 0 turbo diesel. From 1987. engine choices increased further with the introduction of a classic 3. 0 V6 and for the first time. a 2. 0 litre engine featuring 2 spark plugs per cylinder: the Twin Spark was born. With fuel injection and variable valve timing (the first on any production car). this new twin cam produced 148BHP. Many will agree that this engine choice suits the character of the car best of all. Indeed. track days at the famous Nurburgring still feature Alfa 75 2. 0 Twin Sparks in “Ring Edition” livery alongside much more modern offerings from McLaren. Porsche and Lotus.

Our car was registered in April 1991. The history file suggests that it was a 2-owner car to 1997 when it was acquired by an AROC Member who subsequently retained the car as a daily driver for the next 9 years. During this time it was maintained by WAD Auto Developments (Alfa Romeo specialists) of Wolverhampton. Receipts from this period detail regular servicing and minor works including ball-joints and replacement prop-shaft. In 2006. the car was sold to another enthusiast who subsequently embarked on a rolling restoration and re-commissioning exercise employing Alfaman Services of Harrow. In January 2007. over £4100 was invested with principle works to include overhaul of braking system. new exhaust. replacement gearbox mounts and engine mounts. replacement ball joints. track rod ends and shock absorbers and a full service. In August 2008. the car received a new clutch whilst the gearbox was partially re-built. A further £1343. Six months later. the car returned for a small service that culminated in replacement track rod ends (again). new thermostat and minor welding. February 2010 saw the car fully serviced again with new air-flow meter and headlights. It returned another six times to Alfaman over the following 2 years before being sold to another AROC Member. During this 6-year period. over £10. 00 had been spent on the car which had covered less than 3000 miles.

In April 2012. Classic Chrome of Mortlake sold the Alfa to its 5th keeper who employed AlfaCraft of Mortlake to undertake maintenance for the next 12 months. Thereafter a local garage. Wayside of Devizes. have serviced the car with over £800 being spent in August 2013 on a full service and new exhaust rear box. The car has covered just 2000 miles since being used as a regular commuter between Devizes and London.

Today it presents as one would imagine. It is a well-sorted and very original example that has been used and enjoyed on a regular basis. Whilst there is no evident rust. the Alfa Red paint-work has a few chips and scratches but polishes up well. The interior is clean and tidy and everything would seem to work. Turn the key and the 2. 0 twin cam fires into life. On the road is where these cars excel with superb balanced handling. positive steering and enough performance to make any drive entertaining.

In addition to a detailed service file (going back to 2000). the car comes with old MOT Certificates from 1998 onwards.

A really well-maintained example of an increasingly rare sporting saloon.
