G783 XDF. first registered on 25 September 1989 and purchased by Mrs Shaw from Cleeve Motors in Gloucester.   The original dealer stickers and plates are still on the car and unmarked/non-faded  – it has never been kept outside!

Mr Russell. a former RAF technician. bought the car when only 9 months old in June 1990 as his retirement ‘treat' with just 4700 miles on the odometer and took amazingly good care of it. accruing just 23000 miles whilst in his ownership for the following 24 years.   This amazingly original Mk2 Golf is now available to purchase as the owner has sadly passed away.

This GTi is the ‘1G' model but fitted with the ‘narrow bumpers' from the earlier ‘Typ 19' just prior to the follow-on ‘wide bumper' change.   This combination makes it a rare GTi.   The lovely ‘retro' look is complimented perfectly with period Italian Speedline 2-tone alloy wheels. tinted glass. tasteful cloth interior trim and factory sunroof.   An alarm is also fitted (confirmed working).   Indeed. Mr Russell was obviously a man who liked a good buy – he paid £7000 for it against the original spec and cost of the car from the 1990 VW price list on file as follows:

Mr Russell used the car sparingly. using it to drive to bowls in the summer and also for short trips to the tip with a small trailer for his garden rubbish – hence the (expensive) Witter tow-bar.   Again. perfectly period!

The history file and service record show the car being used and maintained up until 2000.   At that point Mr Russell was no longer able to drive and the car was taken off the road.   Having passed away in 2009. the family feel the time has come to sell the car on and recently recommissioned the car with a VW specialist. as the invoices show (£650).   The car drives beautifully - it feels so taut and ‘new' on the road. an amazing experience!

Points to be aware of?  There is a small dent/mark and scuff to the under-bumper area on the front right side and 3 stone chips – 1 to the bonnet and 2 to the passenger door (we have chosen to leave these as-is for originality).   The alloy wheels show some signs of weathering to the lacquer but could easily be refinished.   We assume that the tyres are some years old now and whilst showing good tread depth we would recommend they be changed for safety's sake.   One mudflap is missing but there is a new set supplied with the car.   Finally. there is a slight exhaust blow to remedy (we will be fitting a VW Heritage item before purchase).

In summary. a rare opportunity to own a near mint GTi Mk2 ‘1G' narrow bumper car which remains in highly original factory spec with only 2 owners and 28. 00 miles from new.   The car drives ‘like new' and all VAG documents and service history is present.   With a small amount of work this could easily be a show standard GTi.   A set of steel wheels is also available by separate negotiation.
