1965 Ferrari Twelve Cylinder. Period Rebody, 330GT 2+2. for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.05) based on 334 votes

A rare opportunity to acquire a very special. historic front engine 12 cylinder Ferrari automobile either for collection. use or frame off museum purposes.  Available for sale is one of the most provocative of the mid-1960 era rebodies of a US Model Ferrari 330GT 2+2.

Originally purchased as a 1965 US model 330GT 2+2 Series I from Luigi Chinetti Motors. Inc. . SN 6537.  This blue on tan vehicle was delivered to famed oil baron and racing personality John W. Mecom. Jr. . also the first owner of the NFL's New Orleans Saints.

During Mr. Mecom's ownership. the vehicle was extensively modified (privately) to no longer feature the four headlights of a standard Series I but rather an enclosed headlight. single headlight configuration with well crafted. dual grills. a look that would presage many of the cars on the world's racetracks in the mid-late 1960s.

Soon thereafter. all 330GTs had only two headlights with the Series II introduction.

SN 6537 was one of many Ferraris that Mecom bought and sold and in the late 1960s. SN 6537 was purchased by a collector in Kentucky where it remained for nearly twenty years.  The second owner painted the car's livery red.

In the late 1990s. SN 6537 was purchased and brought by its third owner and brought to the Mid-Atlantic for several years of mechanical and cosmetic refreshment.

The vehicle has been appropriately returned to a stunning. deep blue livery.  The hides have been appropriately returned to better-than-original tan leathers with navy carpet trim work.  The mechanicals have been fundamentally and extensively worked. suspension. brakes. fuel tank. etc. . by Ferrari of Washington (Dulles. Virginia).

Significance:  A piece of automotive art. the car itself is striking and provocative in its appearance.  Those who are deeply familiar with race cars of the 1960s adore it. those who covet the awkward four headlight original Series I cars don't recognize it. and those who prefer the two headlight Series II cars (no enclosures) like to point out their preference for only two headlights.  SN 6537's current owners appreciate ALL of the responses and believe all have merit.

Buyer:  SN 6537's next owner has several very strong opportunities available to him or her in regards to the vehicle.  SN 6537 is a particularly strong candidate for the large collector or significant Ferrari fan to perform a frame off or select-focus restoration to museum quality standards.  The vehicle has very strong lineage and design perspective from the 1960s that is difficult and rare to find in single known examples.  Secondarily. the new buyer can elect to selective restore the car mechanically or cosmetically to drive on a routine basis and operate safely and functionally nationwide.

Pricing/Market Conditions:  As with the broader economy. the prices of even common front twelve cylinder. early Ferraris continue to flourish.  There have been several examples of fully restored and other mid-decade cars moving in the 200-500k/range.

Taking into account the market trends and fact that the successful buyer will likely wish to make adjustments. corrections and other improvements to SN 6537. the car is moving without reserve with bidding starting at $125. 00. 00.  To see more on trend analysis on the 330 spectrum. please see and note other examples available for sale on the world wide web on the 330GT Registry.   This vehicle is being realistically and pragmatically offered. without reserve. starting at tens of thousands of dollars less than the next lowest-priced example.

Investment Thesis:  The thesis of investment with this vehicle is that the value of historic Ferraris is increasing and doing so at an increasing rate.  Moreover. SN 6537 is an extraordinarily rare. U. S. -model Ferrari. sold by an internationally known racing figure's dealership (Mr. Luigi Chinetti) to its first owner. also an internationally known Ferrari collector and racing legend. John Mecom. Jr.

Within the antique Ferrari market. SN 6537 represents a very unusual opportunity to invest into a stable. truly international market within which an extraordinarily limited number of singular assets (older. twelve cylinder. front engined Ferraris) are being purchased and collected by an increasing number of very affluent individuals and enterprises.  The international market is being propelled by the sophistication and wealth of emerging collectors in new regions. e. g. Asia. that are now competing globally to build and establish unique automotive assets from a limited global supply.

The highest profile recent sale of a fully-restored. 1965 Series 1 330GT 2+2. was the sale of SN 6731 in the Summer of 2013 at the Goodwood Festival to an anonymous buyer.  The reported sale price was 360. 00 pounds ($543. 00. 00 USD).

Reflecting the typical buyer profile for the 330GT in 1965. SN 6731's original owner had been music icon John Lennon.

Car Condition:  SN 6537 runs but is not driven and is strictly an investment for the current owners.  The vehicle is obviously street legal and is currently titled. tagged and insured as a private vehicle in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  However. should the successful bidder wish to use the vehicle on a frequent basis. the car will no doubt require appropriate safety and mechanical confirmations prior to doing so.  Not seeking to tamper with the period condition of the car beyond cosmetic and mechanical refreshment. this effort is best done by the next long-term owner as he/they decide if SN 6537 is to become a static display or driven example under their stewardship.  This is an investment vehicle not sold or intended to be used on a daily basis going to the grocery.

The front bumper is present and available (note shop photo) but cosmetically an afterthought following the original nose work years ago; intentionally it is not fitted to the vehicle to allow for full view of the altered nose.

This is a serious investment for a the long-term collector that recognizes unique value and the appreciation opportunity of a little known. one of a kind vehicle with powerful and evocative cosmetics.  SN 6537 is believed to be the only known example of this form of 330GT period rebody.
