Snippets – London Homes & the Mayor of Chester:
GLJ67 has resided at several interesting properties in London during her early ownership – 8 Porchester Gate. London – home to Charles Cubitt Gooch (1811/89) banker & his family. his eldest son Henry was MP (Cons) for Peckham & his youngest. George MP (Lib) for Bath as well as a historian. & author. Nr 6E Bickenhall Mansions was home to Joseph Ullmann who in 1907 was elected to the Board of Deputies of British Jews (founded in 1760 upon the accession to the throne of George III). In the 1860s Nr 25 Hyde Park Square was home to Charles & Rosa Hill. he was a stockbroker with Hill. Fawcett & Hill and Rose was a keen poetess who had written to H. W. Longfellow asking his permission to dedicate her yet to be published book of poems to him! Longfellow of course is best known for “Paul Revere's Ride” & “The Song of Hiawatha”. During WWII GLJ67 was with Thomas & Agnes Sarl-Williams (the surname by adopted by deed poll in 1940). Thomas was an accountant and director of the family firm of Williams & Williams (founded in 1910). the firm initially produced steel stampings for window frames & with the advent of WWI specialised in the production of aircraft parts; due to many of their employees joining up they recruited women to their workforce which was a great success. The company were so proud of their ladies that they commissioned the French artist Ethel Leontine Gabain to produce lithographs & oils depicting their staff. In 1962/63 Thomas Sarl-Williams was appointed Sheriff of Chester and in 1963/4 served as Mayor of the City. His family home on Westminster Avenue was a fine example of the arts & crafts architecture of the period.
