With only 1711 Series Two Double-Six Vanden Plas produced and only a handful remaining. this is one of the rarest of the Series XJ models. Back in 1974. it was certainly the most expensive.
The Vanden Plas model could be differentiated from the already opulent Double-Six by its paint colours. bespoke interior trim. extra body mouldings. automatic air conditioning. reading lights. to name but a few of its additional niceties demanded by Daimler's wealthiest customers.
This 1974 example is finished in Silver Sand with Tuscan leather interior. It was originally supplied to a Mr Anthony Allan of Fulham. London. then went on to belong to the Embassy Hotel in Bournemouth. In total it has had six owners from new. three in 33 years.
The body. always the biggest weak point on these cars. is in outstanding condition. It has never been welded underneath and is rust free. The exterior is extremely straight with superb panel fit. The spot welds are still visible round the wheel arches and along the lower edges of the sills. The vinyl roof is original and in superb condition.
Inside it has recently been recarpeted and the leather refurbished. In addition the headlining has been retrimmed in Alcantara.
With just 62. 00 miles. mechanically our Daimler is extremely good and original. The engine is as smooth and quiet as you'd expect. starts quickly from hot or cold and provides the prodigious performance the model was legendary for. Both fuel tanks/pumps operate correctly with a seamless switchover. Equally. the GM-sourced gearbox operates smoothly as intended. the suspension provides the cushioned ride you'd expect. free of any clunks or harshness. All tyres are excellent and fitted to recently refurbished wheels.
The rear bumper. fuel filler caps and over-riders have just been replaced with NOS items. and the front bumper rechromed.
All fluids have been recently changed and we have just had the automatic heating/air conditioning system rebuilt at substantial expense.
A rare car in unusually lovely condition. and still a very impressive machine to drive.
